On the Fly

Lea entered the living room.  She glanced at the television that was perched on the wall of the far side of the room before she moved to the couch.

Kate and Sara reclined atop the small sofa and they stared at the television with glazed expressions across their features.

Lea stopped in front of the couch and she stood in front of her roommates with a petulant sigh.

      “Hey, what gives!” Kate cried.

“Move out of the way, Lea. We’re trying to watch our show!” Sara whined.

“Can the two of you move over so I can sit down?” Lea asked.

“There’s no room on this  thing for you.” Laura said.

“Sit in that chair over there by the window.” Kate said.

“Laura, are you calling me fat?  And Kate you know that old chair has that sharp spring that rises up and sits in the middle of your butt cheeks when you sit in it for too long.” Lea stated.

“So, lean on one butt cheek and sit in it cause there’s no room for you on this couch.” Kate said.

“Yeah, this thing isn’t even a couch. It’s a love seat.” Laura stated.

“Oh I don’t care what it is, move over!” Lea commanded.

Lea turned around and she fell onto her friend’s laps with a gruff cry.

Kate and Laura screamed in unison.  They leaned back on the couch and they wriggled beneath Lea’s heavy form.

      “Get off!” Sara shouted.

“Get up! I’m missing the best part!” Kate yelled.

Lea giggled while she bounced up and down atop her friend’s seated forms.

Sara and Kate raised their hands and they slapped at Lea’s spine with cries of protest.

“Get off of me!” Kate yelled.

“You’re heavy! And stop with the bouncing!” Lea shouted.

“Move over and I’ll stop.” Lea sang.

      “Ugh!” Laura cried.

      “Fine!” Kate snorted.

Laura and Kate eased their forms across the cushions of the narrow loveseat and Lea fell onto the center of the small sofa with a giggle.

Lea leaned back on the couch with a satisfied grunt.  She raised a rhinestone covered cellular phone in her hands. She stared at the screen of the shining device.  She pressed her thumb rapidly atop the small keys of the machine with a cheerful giggle.

“Now, was that so hard?” Lea asked.

      “Yes!”  Laura shouted.

“I can’t feel my legs.” Kate whined.

“Well, I just broke up with Todd.” Lea said.

      “Are you serious?” Laura asked.

“Yeah, its all over.” Lea said with a nod of her head.

“So you saw him today?” Kate asked.

      “No, not really.” Lea replied.

“So, if you didn’t see him how did you break up with him?” Kate inquired.

Kate turned from the television and she looked at Lea.  She lowered her sight to the cellular phone in the young woman’s hand and she slapped her lips with a gasp.

      “Lea, you didn’t.”  Kate whispered.

      “Didn’t what?” Laura asked.

“Please tell me that you didn’t do what I think you did.” Laura said.

Lea lowered the phone in her grasp and she looked at Laura with a small smile.

      “I did.” Lea said.

“What did she do?” Kate asked.

“Lea broke up with Todd with a damned text message!” Kate shouted.

“What? That’s  a stupid guy move. Did you grow a set of sacs within the last week or what?” Laura asked.

“I did it and it had to be done. Besides, I really didn’t want to see him after he had that little meltdown last week. So, I sent  him the text and he just sent me a message back and its all good.” Lea explained.

“How many expletives did he use?” Kate asked.

      “Exple who?”  Lea inquired.

“So how’d he take it? I mean, did he use all caps or what?” Laura asked.

“No, he used all small letters. And he said that he was sorry.” Lea said with a shrug of her shoulders.

“So, I guess he took it pretty well, considering...” Laura stated.

“Yeah, so you guys were all worried over nothing. Ah, this show is so boring. Laura, change the channel.” Lea commanded.

“No. I like this show.” Laura protested.

“I like it too, so just sit there and suffer or go in your room and do whatever.” Kate said.

“You two are so mean to me. After all that I’ve done for you.” Lea stated.

The sound of a loud crash filled the living room.

The window near the couch shattered into a cascade of shimmering fragments and a large flame covered object soared into the broken portal.

The fire filled item flew across the room and it landed in the center of the floor with a heavy thud.

“What in the hell!”  Kate shouted.

Laura leaped from the couch.  She snatched at a large bottle of water that lay on the floor near her feet.  She pulled the cap off of the container as she rushed forward.  She stopped a few paces in front of the flaming thing and she poured the clear liquid onto the smoldering object.

      The flames were rapidly extinguished.

Laura took a step away from the sizzling object.  She waved at the smoke near her face and she coughed while she stared at the floor.

A scorched brick lay in the center of the singed wooden flooring.

A thin layer of rusted barbed wire had been wrapped around the burned slab of stone and a half melted silver cellular phone was embedded in the center of the cooked rock.

Small bits of melted plastic oozed and bubbled along the sides of the smoking brick and the faint glimmer of brightly colored stones could be seen floating atop the surface of the metallic droplets.

“What the hell is that?” Lea demanded.

“A brick with a cell phone on it.” Laura replied.

      “What?”  Lea asked.

“And I’m seeing some bling on the phone.” Laura said.

“Hey, Lea. Didn’t you and Todd get matching cell phones with all of the fake ice and bling from Foolery Mobile when you started dating last term?” Kate asked.

      “Uh, yeah.” Lea replied.

“Well that explains it.” Laura said.

      “Explains what?” Lea asked.

“Lea, how dense are you?” Laura inquired.

“Yeah, can’t you see that your ex-boyfriend is really pissed off?” Kate asked.

“But he sent me a text saying that he was sorry.” Lea protested.

“Yeah, sorry for going crazy on you. And I think this whole brick through the window thing is the start of it.” Laura said.

“So, Lea. We’re gonna take a wild guess here and assume that Todd didn’t take the break up  well as you thought.”  Kate said.
